Explain
how the arrival of digitally convergent media platforms has impacted on film
producers. Refer to Disney and its 1967 and 2016 versions of The Jungle Book to
support your answer.
In the 1960s, the promotion of films and their releases was
very limited and could only be shown either in the cinema or on the tv. Because
of the huge gap in between classes, only a select few would have been able to
go and see a film and the trailers they would have shown before the film, and
only a select few would have owned a tv and watch the trailers that were played
on the tv. But because Disney was becoming a well-known company and the
animation department was levelling up their work, The Jungle book (1967) was a very
popular family film for everyone to watch and fans of Disney would have been
ecstatic over the new release.
Because of the limited budget Disney had at the time, the
1967 version of The Jungle Book was only around 78 minutes long and as the 19th
animated film Disney released, people were used to the short length and Disney
knew that this format of film making worked and kept with it knowing the
audience was very accepting and couldn’t wait for the new release. But as times
changed Disney changed as well, knowing that if they wanted to stay relevant and
keep their audience engaged, they had to up their game and change the format.
Another
way in which digitally convergent media platforms have impacted film industries
such as Disney is through use platforms such as Dinsey+ which allows Disney to
charge a monthly fee for Audiences to watch a whole catalogue of Disney’s
content from older films such as Jungle Book to Remakes as well as the new
content that Disney is creating/buying from rivals. Similarly, other Media
Platforms such as YouTube can present These by paying a fee to Disney which
gives them the rights to present Dinsey Products. This allows Disney to Make
more money by uploading their entire repertoire of content onto a single site
which could impact other industries that are trying to compete with Disney as
they won’t be able to keep up in terms of profit and Disney will continue to
dominate the film industry.
Through
all the above points Digitally Convergent Media Platforms such as Disney have
been heavily impacted by Digitally Convergent Media Platforms positively as
they have allowed them to completely dominate Film industries by presenting
their product globally. This has allowed them to dominate financially as they
have also bought out all their rival’s and allowed them to reach the highest
numbers of revenue and profit allowing them to provide audiences with
entertainment such as the jungle Book 1967 and the Jungle Book 2016.
